It is the third installment in the Iron Man film series, following 2010's Iron Man and 2008's Iron Man 2. The film was directed by Shane Black and written by Thor and Iron Man co-writer Drew Pearce, and features an ensemble cast, which includes Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark / Iron Man, Guy Pearce as James Rhodes / War Machine, Rebecca Hall as Claire Temple, Don Cheadle as Colonel James Rhodes, Terrence Howard as Obadiah Stane, and Jeff Bridges as Justin Hammer.
Black's script underwent a rewrite by Pearce and final approval by Marvel Studios, with principal photography taking place in Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Vancouver from April to June 2012. Robert De Niro and Mickey Rourke both came on board to replace Cheadle and Howard before they were released from their roles, with Cheadle's character being written out of the film. The film was originally to be the third part of a trilogy, but it was later announced that the character would appear in his own standalone film to be released in 2015. By December 2012, the film had grossed $543.5 million at the box office and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
Iron Man 3 is a plot continuation of the events depicted in the films Iron Man 2 and The Avengers. The film follows the damaged War Machine armor Iron Man created in order to save himself and destroy The Mandarin's armor; the plot also features both Col. Rhodes and Pepper Potts, along with Tony Stark and his friends Happy Hogan and Maya Hansen.
The film was released in the United States on May 3, 2013, in 3D and IMAX 3D formats. A DVD and Blu-ray version was released on November 25, 2013. The film was panned by critics, with a rating of 27% on Rotten Tomatoes and a rating of 3.2 out of 10 on IMDb.
Plot
In the first week of summer, James Rhodes' daughter Maria is abducted by Tony Stark and brought to his mansion in the mountains of California. After recovering, Maria is placed in a wheelchair and is cared for by Pepper Potts.
